Floods can be devastating and can happen anywhere, anytime.
There are three main types of flooding experienced in Tasmania:
These happen when it rains heavily for a long time, soaking the ground and making rivers spill over their edges into nearby low areas.
These are fast and dangerous.
They're caused by extremely heavy rain and can occur anywhere, especially in cities where the drains can't keep up.
Since they happen so suddenly, they're tough to see coming.
These are all about high sea levels, usually from unusual weather systems or strong winds. They create storm surges that swamp low-lying spots near the ocean and beaches.
Floods can also be caused by dam failure, pipeline failure and tsunamis.
The SES also provides flood preparation information and resources.
It is important to create or update your flood plan to ensure everyone in your business knows what to do if there is a flood.
Prepare your emergency kit
Prepare an emergency kit and store it in an easily accessible spot. The kit should include:
your business continuity plan
staff contact details
emergency supplies such as a battery radio and first aid kit.
Prepare your property
Flooding can cause damage to your business assets and stock. Prepare your business premises for floods.
Identify where and how to turn off the electricity, gas and water mains – include instructions in your evacuation plan.
Assess flood risks when storing items in offices and other buildings and prioritise high areas for stacking and storage.
Store all hazardous materials in waterproof containers within a secure, designated cupboard to prevent leaks.
Secure objects that could float and cause damage during flooding.
Investigate options to flood-proof your business including furniture, floor coverings and fittings made of flood resistant materials.
Prepare a current inventory of stock, infrastructure, equipment and supplies.
Make a plan for safeguarding animals and livestock. Keep up to date with warnings and move livestock early to safe high ground with access to food, clean water and shelter.
Plan alternatives for loss of power, access, communications and operations.
Review insurance policies before each storm season to make sure your business is adequately covered – photograph equipment or assets to show pre-event condition.
Backup data and secure documents and store them off-site or use cloud storage.
Actively safeguard all digital information your business creates, collects or stores, including protecting against common cyber security threats.
