Small Business Growth Strategy
The draft Small Business Growth Strategy 2036 is now being shaped using feedback gathered during the consultation.
The Tasmanian Government is committed to making our state the best place in Australia to live, work, raise a family, invest and run a business.
Small businesses are a key part of this vision – they make up more than 97% of all Tasmanian businesses and play a vital role in our local communities and regional areas.
This is why for the last four years we have been focussed on delivering the Small Business Growth Strategy 2026 and the Small Business Growth Strategy Implementation Plan.
To continue this work and help small businesses grow and thrive over the next decade, we’re developing the Small Business Growth Strategy 2036. This new plan will replace the current Small Business Growth Strategy 2026, which ends later this year.
The strategy will guide both government and industry on the priorities and actions needed to support Tasmania’s small business sector into the future.
Consultation
From 23 February to 15 May 2026, we undertook a public consultation to review the current strategy to make sure it reflects what matters most to Tasmanian small businesses today.
We know that since the last consultation in 2022, new challenges and opportunities have emerged, so we wanted to make sure the updated strategy captures them.
The consultation, aimed to understand:
- whether the four themes in the current strategy still represent what’s important to Tasmanian businesses
- whether the objectives under each theme in the current strategy are still the key areas that should be focused on
- challenges or opportunities that have emerged since the last strategy was developed in 2022
Consultation has now closed.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback – your real-life experiences and insights will help us shape a practical, relevant and future‑focused strategy.
What happens next?
We are now analysing the submissions to shape the Draft Small Business Growth Strategy 2036.
Once finalised, Cabinet endorsement will be sought ahead of the strategy's planned release in late 2026.
An initial three-to-five-year implementation plan will also be developed to identify the activities that will be undertaken to deliver on the strategy’s themes and objectives.
