Running a business is very demanding, and while it can be incredibly rewarding, it can take a lot out of you.

We spend more time than we probably should working in the business and neglect working on the business. On top of that – we neglect our mental health. Then suddenly we realise that all the pressure we apply to ourselves does take its toll on us, our staff, and what we had envisioned for our business. You’re not alone.

Beyond Blue’s New Small Business Guides

Our friends at Beyond Blue are at the absolute forefront of research into mental health, and provide fantastic practical assistance and tools to help people take charge of their mental health.

Beyond Blue have created a new guide in consultation with the Beyond Blue Small Business Reference Group, including representation from Business Tasmania.

How to support a small business owner is an essential guide for people to better support the small business owners in their lives. Your close connection as a work contact, friend or family member puts you in a great position to detect worrying changes in behaviour. This guide outlines actions you can take to support a client, customer, family member or friend without being a trained clinician, including:

  • Who to contact for immediate support
  • What are the symptoms of poor mental health and wellbeing
  • How to speak with someone you’re concerned about
  • How to help small business owners take action
  • How to look after your own mental health

In addition, a guide for small business owners has been developed to help identify how you’re coping with stressors in your business and what actions you can take to alleviate them.

If you want to be outspoken about supporting mental health in small business, visit this page from Beyond Blue to support their “Take it Offline” campaign.
