To maximise your business success, be prepared to seek appropriate advice whenever necessary.

Although you are the ultimate decision-maker when it comes to your business, your advisers can support you in their respective fields of specialisation.

Your main advisers are likely to be your:

  • accountant
  • lawyer
  • banker
  • insurance broker

Keep in mind that many of the situations you encounter will call for the skills of more than one of your advisers. If you want to develop a succession plan, for example, input from an accountant and a lawyer would be beneficial.

Ask business colleagues, suppliers and people in your networks about their advisers and whether they are happy with the service they receive.

Before you make your selection, establish contact with, say, three people from each specialty, so that you can compare their skills and attributes.

Once you have drawn up a shortlist of potential advisers, meet with each of them before making your decision.
