Business Tasmania

Starting an agritourism business

Tasmania offers many opportunities for people looking to combine our unique tourism and agriculture experiences and start an agritourism business.

Starting and operating an agritourism business can be complex and can involve specific timeframes, costs and challenges. To make it easier for agritourism businesses to get established in Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government has created a toolkit that provides important information for operators.

The toolkit guides anyone wanting to develop an agritourism idea through the approvals and permits they need to get started and then to maintain the business.

The toolkit includes detailed information about working with regulators, consultants, and technical professionals, holding events and functions, obtaining a liquor licence, setting up a food premises, and meeting fire protection, accessibility and wastewater system requirements.

Flow charts in the toolkit map out the approvals and permits required to establish a wide range of agritourism businesses, including a winery, brewery, distillery or cidery, a cheesery or a seafood business. They cover farms serving fruit, dairy, egg, meat, honey, olives, herbs and spices across a wide range of experience types including tours, dining, tastings, accommodation, foraging and paddock-to-plate experiences.

Agritourism Guide for Regulators

A separate guide for regulators is also available, providing an overview of agritourism, detail on why the sector is a significant economic contributor to Tasmania and specific ways in which regulators can assist agritourism businesses through the approvals process.

The Tasmanian Agritourism Toolkit and Agritourism Guide for Regulators have been produced by the Tasmanian Government through the Tasmanian Agritourism Regulatory Mapping and Reform Project. This project mapped the regulatory permits and approvals required to establish an agritourism business in Tasmania.
