Action learning- collaborating to increase competitiveness

Action learning seeks business outcomes and organisational learning outcomes by addressing complex or 'wicked' problems. This keynote address will present the application of action learning to real business problems and the experiences of employers and employees participating in the Business Action Learning Tasmania (BALT) program. The BALT program is unique in the world in that it is the only example of diverse companies cooperating to improve their profitability, develop their people and grow the local economy.

Bob Cother, Director, The Action Learning Institute
Bob's career in manufacturing spans over 40 years as an industrial engineer, academic and management consultant. Bob is the creator of the highly successful Lean Action Learning program, which has been delivered in Tasmania since 2010. The BALT network has evolved through the continued collaboration of companies participating in Lean Action Learning programs.

Genevieve Cother, Business Development Manager, The Action Learning Institute
Genevieve is an industrial designer and Master of Sustainable Design, specialising in systems design and social innovation. Genevieve co-founded The Action Learning Institute in 2010, with Bob Cother, using design principles to address quality and compliance issues in VET delivery. The Action Learning Institute is recognised internationally as pioneering the use of action learning to deliver nationally recognised qualifications.

This session will also include

  • Rachel Moore – Applied emotional intelligence
    There is a wealth of literature detailing the impact emotion has on individuals’ performance, for example, that people perform their best at work when they feel involved in purposeful work that develops who they are, when they feel valued, cared for, consulted, respected, informed and understood. In this workshop we explore the ‘journey format’ as an effective approach to enhancing emotional intelligence.  Join us as we discover the essential building blocks and key components of a powerful emotional intelligence journey.
  • Wendy French – Introduction to mental health first aid
    Workplaces have a vital role to play in providing supportive environments that promote mental health, wellbeing and resilience in people. Part of creating this environment is having the capacity within an organisation to respond to individuals and employees that may be struggling with mental health problems.
    The Mental Health First Aid course is a skills based training program and more than just awareness-raising. It teaches workplace health and safety officers, human resources staff, contact officers, managers, team leaders, supervisors and individuals how to assist a co-worker who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Having this assistance available supports individual engagement, team cohesion and provides an atmosphere where employees can learn, grow and develop to their full capability - supporting Employer of Choice status.
